Youth Farm: Growing Generations Together

A social enterprise dedicated to reducing the generation gap between young and older generations through urban farming.

The Challenge & The Opportunity

With the increase of urban area, urban farming has been popular lately, increasing access to affordable, healthy, and fresh vegetables. If done correctly, it can also create additional income for the grower.

Urbanization has caused urban area increase, which affects our society badly. The lack of space in a high-density urban area is starting to have a negative impact. Small houses with a lot of people worsen the problem, contributing to an increase in the generation gap between the old and young generation. This problem can be as divisive as racial disharmony because it occurs right within the family, the smallest institution within the fabric of a nation and society.

Youth Farm has worked with community farms such as PJS 1 and PJS 6 where they are actively operating in Petaling Jaya, but the participation was majority from the older generation. The youth are hard to be found here, highlighting the gap we aim to close.

Our Social Mission

Our social mission is to reduce the generation gap between the young and older generations through urban farming, which we achieve through the Youth Farm Mentorship Programme.

Youth Farm Mentoring Program

The 6-Month Journey

The Youth Farm Mentorship Programme is a 6-month initiative where youth join to learn urban farming, mentored by senior community farm members.

  • Participants will be guided to create their own urban farm, utilizing either hydroponics or raised bed farming, with help from their dedicated mentor.
  • They will be trained to be familiar with common farming techniques while simultaneously being empowered by closing the gap between the young and older generation at the community farm.
  • Using Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), the vegetables they produce can either be eaten or sold back to the community for cash, promoting self-sustainability.

Community Impact & UNSDG Alignment

UN SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities Logo

If participants want to contribute more, we collaborate with local food bank initiatives that provide for underprivileged communities. Youth farm participants can contribute their vegetables back to the community through this food bank. This empowers the community, especially the youth, to become more empathetic and take action, which aligns with UNSDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Why Urban Farming?

  • Promotes sustainable food sources in dense areas.
  • Teaches practical skills and environmental awareness.
  • Creates inter-generational learning and social bonds.
  • Potential for income generation through CSA models.
