With the increase of urban area, urban farming has been popular lately, increasing access to affordable, healthy, and fresh vegetables. If done correctly, it can also create additional income for the grower.
Urbanization has caused urban area increase, which affects our society badly. The lack of space in a high-density urban area is starting to have a negative impact. Small houses with a lot of people worsen the problem, contributing to an increase in the generation gap between the old and young generation. This problem can be as divisive as racial disharmony because it occurs right within the family, the smallest institution within the fabric of a nation and society.
Youth Farm has worked with community farms such as PJS 1 and PJS 6 where they are actively operating in Petaling Jaya, but the participation was majority from the older generation. The youth are hard to be found here, highlighting the gap we aim to close.
Our social mission is to reduce the generation gap between the young and older generations through urban farming, which we achieve through the Youth Farm Mentorship Programme.
The Youth Farm Mentorship Programme is a 6-month initiative where youth join to learn urban farming, mentored by senior community farm members.
If participants want to contribute more, we collaborate with local food bank initiatives that provide for underprivileged communities. Youth farm participants can contribute their vegetables back to the community through this food bank. This empowers the community, especially the youth, to become more empathetic and take action, which aligns with UNSDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
